JAMB REQUIREMENTS TO STUDY BIOCHEMISTRY IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES, YOUR USEFUL GUIDE IN 2023/2024
This article will accurately guide you through the requirements to study Biochemistry in any Nigerian university of your choice. You will know what it takes to successfully gain admission into the medical faculty of any Nigerian university to study Biochemistry. You will also see a list of Nigerian universities where you can study Biochemistry and/ or Medical Biochemistry.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a statutory body in Nigeria saddled with the responsibility to conduct matriculation examination and admit students into Nigerian tertiary institutions. The requirements to study Biochemistry and/or Medical Biochemistry in Nigerian universities stated in this post are as spelt out on pages 432 to 434 of the current JAMB Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS). This article aims to make the information more handy and accessible to all parents and guardians as well as students who wish to study Biochemistry or Medical Biochemistry in any university in Nigeria.
UTME / O’ level subject requirements to study Biochemistry in Nigerian universities
The UTME / O’ level subject requirements to study Biochemistry in Nigerian universities are as follows
Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
JAMB UTME subject combination requirements to study Biochemistry in Nigerian universities
JAMB UTME subjects are the subjects which you must write in the JAMB Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The UTME subject combination requirement for Biochemistry is as follows:
Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Direct Entry requirements to study Biochemistry in Nigerian universities
Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry and any one of Physics, Biology/ Zoology/Botany and Mathematics.
Special considerations for Direct Entry
(i) BENIN requires three (3) ‘A’ Level passes to include Biology/Zoology, Chemistry and Physics plus the UTME requirements.
(ii) CALABAR does not admit through Direct Entry.
(iii) FUTO requires:
a) At least three ‘A’ level passes not below Grade C in Physics and any two of Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.
b) ND/HND at Upper Credit level in Biomedical Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
c) First Degree in Engineering or health sciences.
d) Very good passes in three JUPEB subjects namely Chemistry, Biology and Physics. It does not accept NCE. Candidates must in addition meet the ‘O’ Level requirements.
(iv) IBADAN requires two (2) A’ level passes from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Botany plus the UTME requirements.
(v) LAUTECH accepts ‘A’ Level passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics ND upper credit in related programme plus the UTME requirements may be considered for 200 level.
(vi) DELSU requires:
a) HSC or GCE ‘A’ Level or its equivalent passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology (Botany may be accepted in lieu of Biology or Zoology.
b) First degree in relevant Biological Sciences not below Second Class Lower Division.
(vii) FUTA requires:
a) ND with a minimum of Upper Credit Level or its equivalent in Biomedical Technology or related discipline.
b) Good passes at the ‘A’ Level of General Certificate of Education or its equivalent in Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry or Physics.
Special considerations for UTME
(i) CALABAR same as in Medicine and Surgery.
(ii) IBADAN same as in Medicine and Surgery.
(iii) DELSU requires SSC ‘O’ Level or its equivalent with credit passes in at least five (5) subject which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in not more than two sittings.
(iv) FUTA requires five (5) SSC credit passes or its equivalent at a maximum of two (2) sittings in the following subjects: Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
(v) FUTO requires at least five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology in not more than two (2) sittings
Special considerations for UTME subjects
(i) FUTA requires Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry/Physics.
(ii) FUTO requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
