You will know what it takes to successfully gain admission into the law faculty of any Nigerian university to study law. We will give you a list of Nigerian universities where you can study Law.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a statutory body in Nigeria saddled with the responsibility to conduct matriculation examination and admit students into Nigerian tertiary institutions. The requirements to study law in Nigerian universities stated in this post are as spelt out on pages 418 to 430 of the current JAMB Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS). This article aims to make the information more handy and accessible to all students who wish to study law in any Nigerian university as well as parents and guardians.
UTME / O’ LEVEL SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS TO STUDY LAW IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
The ‘O’ level subject requirements to study law in Nigerian universities are as follows:
Five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics.
JAMB UTME SUBJECT COMBINATION REQUIREMENTS TO STUDY LAW IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
JAMB UTME subjects are the subjects which you must write in the JAMB Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The UTME subject combination requirements to study law is as follows:
Any three (3) Arts or Social Science subjects
DIRECT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS TO STUDY LAW IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
The Direct Entry requirements to study Law in Nigerian universities are as follows:
- Two ‘A’ Level passes in Arts or Social Science subjects.
- NCE/ND/First Degree (Second Class Lower).
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR DIRECT ENTRY
- AAU does not accept any Diploma and NCE but accepts only first degree second class lower plus the UTME requirements. AAUA requires ‘O’ Level credit pass in Literature in English and Mathematics.
- ABU accepts two ‘A’ Level/UMB passes in English Literature and other Arts or Social Science subjects. ASU Diploma in Law with at least Merit grade. ABU Diploma in Shari’ah and Civil Law with at least Merit grade.
- ABUAD accepts excellent passes in JUPEB subjects.
- BENIN requires UTME requirements plus two (2) ‘A’ Level passes; HND lower credit and NCE credit passes in two ‘2’ teaching subjects; Degree with at least second class lower division.
- BIU requires in addition to the UTME requirements a minimum of two (2) relevant passes at ‘A’ Level or NCE Merits in three (3) subjects.
- BOWEN accepts
- Three (3) ‘A’ Level passes together with ‘O’ Level credit passes at not less than five (5) other subjects including English Language and Literature in English or equivalent.
- A university degree of not less than a second class lower division plus ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language and Literature in English.
- Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes or equivalent plus three (3) ‘O’ Level credit passes including English Language and Literature in English.
- CALABAR accepts
- Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Arts or Social Science subjects
- NCE/ND/First degree (second class lower)
- COOU accepts GCE, ‘A’ Level or HSC passes in two (2) subjects plus ‘O’ Level credit passes in three (3) subjects including English Language and Mathematics, Literature in English plus UTME requirement, first degree at least second class lower. Does not require Literature in English for degree holders.
- ILORIN does not require Literature in English for degree holders.
- CUAB accepts:
- Degree
- Mature students with experience in related programs who possesses basic requirements in (a) shall be considered for admission
- EBSU accepts:
- HND and ND with a minimum of upper credit from relevant programmes
- NCE, ND or Degree in Arts or Social Science subjects in addition to the UTME requirements.
- IBADAN accepts two (2) passes at ‘A’ Level plus ‘O’ Level credit passes in five (5) or six (6) other subjects including English Language and Literature in English. Accepts good first degree with ‘O’ Level credit pass in English Language.
- JOS accepts any class of first degree but does not accept NCE, ND and HND.
- LAGOS accepts very good passes in JUPEB/’A’ Level subjects: Literature in English and any two (2) Arts or Social Sciences. First degree with a minimum of second class upper. ‘’LAGOS does not accept JUPEB/ A’ Level passes in Fine Arts, Accounting or Commerce’’.
- LASU requires:
- Two A’ Level passes with O’ Level credit passes in English Language and Literature in English
- First degree minimum of third class plus O’ Level credit passes in five (5) subjects to include English Language and Literature in English.
- MAIDUGURI requires two (2) A’ Level passes from Government, Literature in English and Religious Studies.
- NDU accepts:
- Two (2) passes at A’ Level in relevant subjects or its equivalent
- O’ Level credit passes or equivalent in five (5) subjects to include English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics plus second class honours degree of this university or any other university recognised by Senate.
- OAU accepts first degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Honours plus the UTME requirements.
- OOU accepts a degree in Arts or Social Science not lower than a second class lower plus the basic UTME requirements.
- PHC accepts diploma in Law certificate from a recognised institution with a minimum of upper credit level pass, including UTME entry requirements. A first degree from a recognised university with a minimum of Second-Class Honours, including UTME entry requirements. Two (2) A’ Level GCE or HCE or JUPEB or IJMB pass in Art or Social Science subject, including UTME entry requirements.
- RSU accepts candidates with first degree from a recognised university with a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower) Division. However, preference shall be given to candidates with Second Class Honour (Upper) Division or higher degrees. HND/ND (Upper Credit) relevant to the discipline may be considered. In addition, such candidates must also satisfy the U.M.E. entry requirements.
- UMYUK requires a minimum of 9 points in IJMB/HSC/GCE A’ Level/NCE in any Art or Social Science subject. Candidates with a minimum of lower credit pass in Diploma in Law from any recognised College of Legal Studies in Nigeria may also be admitted.
- UNIOSUN accepts:
- Three (3) passes at A’ Level together with O’ Level credit passes at not less than five (5) other subjects including English Language and Literature in English or equivalent.
- A university degree of Osun State University, in a relevant programme.
- UNIZIK accepts:
- HND with credits or distinction aggregate from recognised institution and at least five (5) O’ Level credit passes which must include English Language, Mathematics, and/ or any other Science subject.
- NCE/Degree plus the UTME requirements.
- UYO does not accept IJMB mathematics and/or any other science subject.
- LAGOS require five (5) O’ Level credit passes in English Language, mathematics, Literature in English and any two Arts or Social Science subjects.
- EUI accepts:
- Two (2) A’ Level passes in Arts or Social Science subjects including Literature in English
- NCE/OND/HND not below credit level
- Very good passes in JUPEB/IJMB subjects: Literature in English and any two (2) Arts or Social Science subject
- B.Sc. in relevant field not below Second Class lower.
- DELSU requires
- Candidate must possess GCE A’ Level passes in two (2) subjects one of which must include Literature in English
- Credit in DELSU Diploma in Law
- Degrees in the Humanities is accepted for Law.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR UTME
- AAU and NAU require O’ Level pass in one (1) science subject and one (1) commercial subject and at least O’ Level pass in Mathematics.
- ABUAD accepts five (5) O’ Level Credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics and any two (2) Arts or Social Science subjects at one sitting.
- BOWEN requires five (5) ‘O Level credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English and three (3) other Art subjects at not more than two sittings.
- BSU accepts any other three (3) Arts/Social Science subjects.
- CUAB requires five (5) O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Literature in English Government and Economics at not more than two sittings. Candidates with O’ Level pass in Mathematics may be eligible for admission.
- EBSU requires any other two (2) Arts or Social Science subjects.
- ESUTECH requires ‘O’ Level credit passes in Mathematics or Science subject.
- IBADAN requires five (5)’O’ Level credit passes at one sitting or six (6) ‘O’ Level credit passes at two (2) sittings to include English Language, Literature in English, any other subjects from Arts, Social Sciences or Sciences.
- ILORIN requires Literature in English plus any two (2) subjects.
- JOS and OOU; ‘O’ Level credit pass in Mathematics is not compulsory.
- PAAU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes or equivalents in English Language, Literature in English and any other three (3) Sciences, Social Sciences or Arts subjects.
- LAGOS requires Five O/Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and any two Arts or Social Sciences subjects.
- NDU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and any other two (2) subjects at not more than two (2) sittings.
- OAU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language and Literature in English.
- OOU requires ‘O’ Level credit pass in Literature in English and at least ‘O’ Level pass in Mathematics.
- PHC requires Five (5) O Level Credits in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and two (2) other credits from Economics, Government, History, Geography, Commerce, CRK/IRK.
- UMYUK requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes or equivalents in English Language, Literature in English and any other three (3) Social Science or Arts subjects with ‘O’ Level credit pass in Mathematics at not more than two (2) sittings.
- UNN does not require Mathematics and does not accept Fine Art or Local languages.
- UYO, MADONNA, BIU, and BENIN accept ‘O’ Level pass in Mathematics.
- EUI requires five (5) credit passes at SSC or its equivalent to include English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics.
- DELSU requires at least five (5) credit passes which must include English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics at not more than two (2) sittings and two (2) other subjects from Arts and Social Sciences.
- AAUA requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics and any other two subjects from, CRK /IRS, Igbo Language/Yoruba Language/Hausa Language, History, Economics, Geography, Commerce, Accounts/Book-keeping and Government.
- RSU requires Five (5) WASC/SSCE/GCE/NECO O/L in at least credit passes from English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and any two (2) Arts/Social Science subjects.
- CALABAR accepts Five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics.
- ABU requires Five ‘O’ Level Credit passes which must include English Language, Literature in English and any other three Arts or Social Science Subjects.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR UTME SUBJECTS
- BOWEN, ILORIN, UNN, BENIN, AAU and OAU require Literature in English plus any two (2) subjects.
- CUAB require Literature in English and any other Arts or Social Science subjects.
- EBSU requires Literature in English and either Government, History, CRS or Economics.
- IBADAN accepts Science subjects.
- LAGOS requires English Language and any three Arts or Social Sciences subjects. Lagos does not accept Music, Fine Arts, and Principles of Accounting. Lagos accepts either Economics or Commerce but not both.
- OOU does not insist on Literature in English.
- PHC requires Literature in English and any two (2) subjects from Economics, Government, History, Geography, Commerce, CRK/IRK
- RSU requires English Language, Literature in English, CRK, History / Government.
- DELSU accepts Literature in English and any other two (2) subjects in Art/Social Science.
- AAUA accepts Literature in English and any two (2) subjects in Art/Social Science.
- MAIDUGURI requires any three (3) from Government, Economics, Geography or Arts subjects.
- UMYUK requires Literature in English and any other two (2) Arts and Social Science subject
- ABUAD requires Literature in English and any two Arts or Social Science subjects.
- CALABAR requires Literature in English and Christian Religious Knowledge, Govt./History or Economic or any other Arts or Social Science Subjects
- ABU requires Use of English, Literature in English and any other two Arts or Social Science subjects.
NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES WHERE YOU CAN STUDY LAW

ABU, OOU and UNIZIK offer the course as CIVIL LAW. The requirements are the same as spelt out in LAW above.
AAUA and MAIDUGURI offer the course as PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INTERNATIONAL LAW. The requirements are also the same as spelt out in LAW above.

JOS offers CRIMINOLOGY AND SECURITY STUDIES in the Faculty of Law. In this case the Direct Entry requirement is:
i. Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Arts or Social Science subjects.
ii. ND in Law, Criminal Justice, Public Administration with passes at lower credit or higher grade.
The UTME requirement for Criminology and Security Studies is: Five (5) SSC credit passes to include English Language.
The UTME subject requirement is: Any three (3) subjects
