What is electricity prepaid meter?

Electricity prepaid meter is the type of electricity meter that allows you to buy recharge token (like your phone recharge card PIN) from your electricity distribution company. The token is then loaded into the meter via the meter user interface unit (UIU). The UIU is that small component connected to your meter that has a small screen and key pad where you can type.

This type of meter allows you to use electricity on a ‘pay as you go basis’ as you are able to control what you spend on power and you only pay for what you consume. This is quite unlike the postpaid meter where you are given an estimated bill every month.

Follow the following easy steps to recharge your electricity prepaid meter:

1. Buy electricity token from Vtpass

To buy your electricity token online, simply do the following:

a. Click here to visit Vtpass;

b. Right there on the home page of the website that just opens up, locate ‘Pay Electricity Bill’ by the left side of the page and click on it;

c. Select your distribution company by clicking on it;

d. Carefully supply your details on the little form that opens up:

Under ‘Meter Type’ select ‘Prepaid’. Type in your correct meter number in the ‘Meter Number’ field. Type in your phone number and e-mail in their respective fields. Type in the amount of recharge that you want in the ‘Amount’ field, and then click ‘Continue’;

e. Confirm your details in the next window that opens up and then select your preferred payment method. You can choose to pay with your wallet if you have an account with Vtpass and your wallet is funded. You can also choose to pay with ATM card or bank transfer.

f. To pay with ATM card, select ‘Pay with Card’ and follow the instructions on the payment gateway. This is a smart way to pay for your electricity token. Upon successful payment your token will be delivered to your phone number and e-mail;

g. To pay with bank transfer, click on ‘Bank Transfer’ and an account number will be shown to you for your transfer. Transfer the exact amount shown to you immediately. After a successful transfer click on ‘I’ve transferred the money’. Your token will be delivered to your phone and e-mail upon confirmation of your payment.

h. To pay with your wallet you need to first of all sign up with the platform and then fund your wallet. To sign up click ‘Sin up’ on the top menu and follow the instructions to create your account. When you are logged in, look at the left hand menu and click on ‘More’ and then click on ‘Credit Wallet’. Select your preferred payment method, input the amount and follow the instructions. i. Upon successful payment, the platform generates a payment receipt for you. The receipt should carry the purchased electricity token which is a set of numbers with 20 digits. The token will also be delivered to your supplied phone number and e-mail.

2.  Ensure there is power.

The meter user interface unit (UIU) will be on once there is power. If you are loading your prepaid meter for the first time ensure that the meter and the UIU were properly installed and activated by the engineers and technicians from the distribution company.

3.    Load the electricity token.

To load your electricity token into your electricity prepaid meter, carefully and correctly key in the digits of your token into the prepaid meter using the keys found on the UIU. Then press the enter key. The electricity units you have just loaded will be added immediately to your electricity unit balance.
