JAMB REQUIREMENTS AND UNIVERSITIES TO STUDY ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN NIGERIA, YOUR USEFUL GUIDE IN 2024/2025
This article will accurately guide you through the requirements to study English Language in any Nigerian university of your choice. You will know what it takes to successfully gain admission into the arts and humanities faculty of any Nigerian university to study English Language. You will also see a list of Nigerian universities where you can study English Language and other related courses.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a statutory body in Nigeria saddled with the responsibility to conduct matriculation examination and admit students into Nigerian tertiary institutions. The requirements to study English Language in Nigerian universities stated in this post are as spelt out on pages 154 to 165 of the current JAMB Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS). This article aims to make the information more handy and accessible to all parents and guardians as well as students who wish to study English Language as well as other related courses in any university in Nigeria.
UTME / O’ level subject requirements to study English Language in Nigerian universities
Five (5) SSC credit passes to include Literature in English, English Language and three other Arts or Social Science subjects.
JAMB UTME subject combination requirements to study English Language in Nigerian universities
Literature in English, one other Arts subject and another Arts or Social Science subject.
Direct Entry requirements to study English Language in Nigerian universities
Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include Literature in English and one other Arts subject.
Special considerations for Direct Entry
(i) AAU accepts ND credit in Mass Communication
(ii) ABU accepts Two ‘A’ level passes including English at IJMB/ NCE, or a minimum of Merit in Diploma. Candidates with Diploma must also possess pass in Literature in English.
(iii) AJAYI accepts two (2) ‘A’ Level passes or equivalent in Literature in English, one other Arts subject plus three (3) ‘O’ level credit passes.
(iv) AL-HIKMAH accepts two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include Literature in English.
(v) AUE accepts NCE merit or ND credit plus the UTME requirements.
(vi) AUE, COOU, UNIZIK, MAIDUGURI, UDU and JOS accept NCE with English Language major, candidates to spend one extra year in UNIZIK
(vii) AUGUSTINE accepts NCE merit or HND credit in addition to UTME requirements.
(viii) BENIN accepts NCE credit in English Language as main subject.
(ix) BIU accepts two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in relevant subjects or NCE merit in three (3) subjects or ND credit in relevant programmes plus UTME requirements.
(x) CHRISTOPHER accepts HND, ND or NCE with credit passes in relevant programmes/subjects.
(xi) EBSU accepts NCE merit in English Language.
(xii) EBSU accepts NCE merit or ND credit in relevant subjects/programmes.
(xiii) FED-DUTSE accepts:
(i) NCE with English as main subject with a minimum of merit score in each of the three main subjects.
(ii) IJMB with a minimum of nine points in Literature in English, one Arts related subject, and a Social Science related subject.
(iii) Diploma (not University Diploma) with English as one of the main subjects at a minimum of credit level.
(xiv) FED-DUTSINMA accepts Two ‘A’ level passes to include Literature in English and one other Arts subject. OND/NCE with good grades in any relevant area.
(xv) GSU, AJAYI and NAUB, accept NCE merit in Literature in English.
(xvi) IBADAN accepts NCE merit in two (2) teaching subjects including Literature in English not General English along with the UTME requirements. It also accepts two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include Literature in English.
(xvii) ILORIN accepts:
a) At least two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include Literature-in-English and one other Arts or Social Science Subject (Government)
b) NCE with English Major.
(xviii) KWASU accepts NCE with English major.
(xix) LAGOS requires Very good passes in three JUPEB/A’ Level subjects: Literature-in-English and any two of Igbo/Yoruba, CRS, IRS, History, Government, Music, Fine Arts and French.
(xx) MCPHERSON accepts JUPEB/IJMB, ‘A’ level passes or equivalent in related subjects.
(xxi) NASARAWA accepts NCE merit in English Language.
(xxii) NILE accepts any two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Arts or Social Science subjects, ND/HND lower credit or NCE merit in relevant programmes/subjects.
(xxiii) IMSU – no Direct Entry.
(xxiv) PLASU accepts:
a) Degree in any programme provided the candidate meets the UTME requirements.
b) HND lower credits in relevant programme with the UTME requirements.
c) ND lower credit in relevant programme, with the UTME requirements.
d) IJMB- seven (7) points in relevant subjects with the UTME requirements.
(xxv) TSUJ accepts NCE in English Major.
(xxvi) UMYUK accepts candidates with a minimum of 9 points in IJMB/HSC/GCE ‘A’ Level/NCE in English or English Literature and any other relevant subject. Candidates with a minimum of lower credit pass in Diploma in English or English Literature from recognized institutions may also be admitted.
(xxvii) UNIOSUN accepts two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include Literature in English and other Arts subjects or NCE in English/and any other Arts subjects.
xxviii) UYO requires minimum of nine (9) points with two (2) or three (3) GCE ‘A’ Level subjects or equivalent. NCE pass in relevant subjects/ GCE ‘A’ Level in English Language and Literature in English.
(xxix) EUI requires:
a) Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include Literature in English and one other Arts subject.
b) NCE with passes at merit level in relevant subjects.
c) ND/HND at credit level in related programme.
d) Very good passes in JUPEB/IJMB subjects: Literature in English and any two (2) of Religious Studies, History, Government, Music, Fine Arts and French.
(xxx) MOUNTAIN TOP In addition to “O” level subjects, ONLY candidates who possess JUPEBIJMB result or Diploma in English language-related courses result are considered for admission. Such Diploma MUST be with minimum of Lower Credit. A candidate who has successfully gone through the JUPEB Foundation programme in relevant Arts and Social Science subjects is also qualified to be considered for admission.
(xxxi) IAUED accepts GCE A Level or its equivalent. Merit in English (NCE) and UTME Requirements. Merit at the National Diploma(ND). The above including the following O’ level credit in English Language, Mathematics, Literature (Compulsory), History, Christian Religious Studies (any other arts subject).
(xxxii) FED-WUKARI accepts Two A’ level passes to include Literature in English and one other arts subject at GCE/IJMB/Advanced NABTEB Or a Merit pass at NCE which should include English/Literature in English from a recognized state or Federal college of education or at least a credit at OND/HND in Mass Communication or relevant field. Candidates must also satisfy the O/L requirement for admission.
(xxxiii) PHC accepts Two (2) Advanced level Passes in GCE or HSC or JUPEB or IJMB in the Arts subjects including Literature in English, in addition to UTME entry requirements. NCE in two (2) Arts subjects including English Language, with an overall merit level Pass from a recognized College of Education, in addition to UTME entry requirements.
(xxxiv) FED-KASHERE accepts Two ‘A’ Level credit passes including Literature in English and one other Arts subject.
(xxxv) RSU accepts Admission into Year Ill. Degree relevant to the Programme. HND (Upper Credit) relevant to the Programme from a recognized Institution. Admission to Year II.OND/ND (Upper Credit) relevant to the discipline. ND (Lower Credit) relevant to the Programme. In addition, all such candidates above must also satisfy the U.M.E. entry requirements
(xxxvi) FED-LAFIA accepts In addition to the UTME requirements, DE Candidates must have any of the following: 2 GCE (Advance Level) credit passes one of which must be Literature in English.NCE: Merit pass in English and any other relevant subjects.ND: Lower credit pass in English and any relevant subjects/HND. IJMB: Minimum of 9 points in three subjects, one of which must be English and any relevant subjects.
(xxxvii) SOSU accepts Merit in Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in English or a minimum of Lower Credit at Diploma in Mass Communication.
(xxxviii) FED-LOKOJA requires;
a) Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include Literature and one other Arts or Social Science subject. (Nott less than a ‘B’ or combination of a ‘B’, ‘C’ and ‘E’.
b) At least credit pass in three (3) subject areas including Literature in English at NCE Level.
c) For OND, minimum of upper credit in relevant courses from any recognized institution.
d) For HND, minimum of upper credit in relevant courses from any recognized institution.
e) For Bachelor’s Degree, minimum of 3rd class in relevant courses from any recognized institution.
Special considerations for UTME
(i) ABU requires Five ‘O’ level credit passes to include Literature in English , English Language, and any other Arts or Social Science subjects
(ii) AJAYI requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Literature in English, another Arts subject and any other two (2) subjects.
(iii) AUE and UYO require ‘O’ Level credit passes in Mathematics and other two (2) Arts or Social Science subjects.
(iv) EBSU and COVENANT also require ‘O’ Level credit passes in Mathematics and two (2) other Arts or Social Science subjects.
(v) AUN accepts:
a) ‘A’ Level passes to include Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Government, History, Literature in English, Technical Drawing, Visual Arts, Computer Studies, Information Technology, Civics, Environmental Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and French.
b) ND/HND.
c) ICGSE and ‘A’ level Cambridge
vi) AUN does not accept five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in the following; Agriculture, Food and Nutrition, Home Economics, Home Craft, Home Management, Physical Education, Physical and Health Education, Music, Commerce, Accounting, Financial Accounting, Book keeping, Islamic History, Religious Studies, Tajweed, Library Studies, Diction, Kiswahili, Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Arabic, Turkish, Study skills. AUN does not offer admissions direct to 200 level and may transfer credits relevant to its major at the discretion of the Dean of School.
(vii) BAYERO requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include Literature in English, English Language plus three (3) other Arts subjects
(viii) BENIN require one other Arts subject.
(ix) BENIN, BSU and JOS accept TCII merit.
(x) BIU requires the three (3) ‘O’ Level subjects to come from either Arts or Social Sciences.
(xi) EDWIN CLARK requires, also ‘O’ Level credit pass in Government.
(xii) FED-DUTSE accepts five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, and any three (3) of the following subjects: Literature in English, Religious Studies, Nigerian Language, Arabic or French, History, Government or Economics or Civic Education at not more than two sittings of anyone of the following combinations: WAEC+WAEC, WAEC+NECO, NABTEB+WAEC and NECO+NECO.
(xiii) REDEEMERS accepts ‘O’ Level pass in Mathematics.
(xiv) FED-DUTSINMA requires Five ‘O’ level Credits to include: Literature in English, English Language, Mathematics and any other two Arts subjects.
(xv) LAGOS require five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include Literature in English, English Language, Mathematics and one other Arts subjects.
(xvi) FED-LAFIA requires Five (5) Credit passes at SSCE, GCE, NECO and NABTEB O’ Level examination including English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics and two other relevant subjects in not more than two sittings.
(xvii) IBADAN requires five (5) or six (6) ‘O’ Level credit passes at one or two (2) sittings to include Literature in English, English Language, one other Arts subject and any other two (2) or three (3) subjects from Arts, Social Sciences or Science.
(xviii) ILORIN accepts five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include Literature-in-English, Mathematics and any two (2) Arts/ Social Science Subjects. (Govt.). It also accepts any Arts or Social Science (Govt.).
(xix) KWASU accepts five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Literature in English plus two (2) Arts subjects and one Social Science/Science subject.
(xx) LAGOS requires Five O/Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature-in-English and any two of French, History/Government, CRS/IRS and any Nigerian Language.
(xxi) NILE accepts any Arts/Social Science subjects.
(xxii) OAU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include Literature in English and English Language and one other Arts subject plus any other subject.
(xxiii) PHC requires Five (5) SSC credits in English Language, Literature in English and any other three (3) subjects from History/Government, CRK/IRK, Economics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Physics, Igbo/Hausa/Yoruba, Fine Art, Geography, Commerce.
(xxiv) SLUK accepts five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, one Arts subject and another Arts or Social Science subjects.
(xxv) UMYUK requires five (5) ‘O’Level credit passes or its equivalent including English Language, Literature in English and any other three (3) subjects from Arts or Social Sciences and a credit pass in Mathematics at not more than two (2) sittings.
(xxvi) UNIKINGS and REDEEMER’S require five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English and a pass in Mathematics.
(xxvii) AUGUSTINE- ‘O’ Level credit in Mathematics is not compulsory.
(xxviii) EUI requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes at SSC or its equivalent to include Literature in English, English Language, Mathematics and two (2) other Arts or Social Science subjects.
(xxix) MOUNTAIN TOP – It is required that candidates must possess 5 O’ Level Credits at not more than two (2) sittings including English Language, Mathematics, Literature-in-English and any other arts or social science subjects.
(xxx) FED-LOKOJA requires five (5) credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings in English Language, Literature in English and any other three (3) from Arts or Social Science subjects.
(xxxi) IAUED: Entry requirements are O’ Level credit in English Language, Mathematics, Literature (Compulsory), History, Christian Religious Studies (any other arts subject).
(xxxii) FED-WUKARI requires Five (5) Credits at not more than two sittings including English Language, Mathematics and Literature in English and any Two other relevant subjects from Arts or social sciences obtained at SSCE, GCE O/L NECO/NABTEB or its equivalent.
(xxxiii) FED-KASHERE requires Five credit passes at SSCE (or its equivalent) in English, Mathematics and Literature in English, and any other two from Arts and Social Science Subjects.
(xxxiv) RSU requires Five (5) WASC/GCE/SSCE/NECO ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and any other two (2) subjects
(xxxv) SOSU requires Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any other three (3) Arts or Social Science subjects at not more than two sittings.
Special considerations for UTME Subjects
(i) AUE and SAU require Literature in English, Government/History or any other Arts subject.
(ii) AUGUSTINE, FED-LOKOJA and require Literature in English and any other two (2) Arts or Social Science subjects.
(iii) BOWEN does not accept any Social Science subject.
(iv) CHRISTOPHER requires one Social Science and one Arts subjects.
(v) EBSU requires any two (2) of History, CRS, Government, French as the other subjects.
(vi) FED-DUTSE accepts any two of the following: Literature in English, Nigerian Language, History, Religious Studies, plus one of the following two subjects: Economics and Government. Similarly, candidates with Use of English and any three of Literature in English, Nigerian Language, Religious Studies and History are also qualified.
(vii) FED-DUTSINMA requires English Language, Literature in English, two other Arts or Social Sciences subjects
(viii) LAGOS requires English Language, Literature-in-English and any two of CRS/IRS, French, History, Government and any Nigerian Language.
(ix) NILE accepts any three (3) Arts or Social Science subjects.
(x) SLUK accepts any two (2) Arts subjects and one other Arts or Social Science subject.
(xi) SOSU requires Use of English and any other two (2) Arts or Social Science Subjects
(xii) MAIDUGURI requires Literature in English and any other two (2) subjects.
(xiii) MOUNTAIN TOP requires English Language, Literature in English and any other two subjects from the Social Sciences and the Arts.
(xiv) ILORIN requires Literature-in-English, one other Arts subject and another Arts or Social Science subject. (Govt.).
(xv) IAUED requires English Language, Literature, Christian Religious Studies and History
(xvi) FED-WUKARI requires Literature in English, one Arts subject, another Arts or Social Science Subject.
(xvii) ABU requires Use of English, one Arts subject and two other Arts or Social Science subjects.
(xviii) PHC requires Literature in English and any other two (2) subjects from History/Government, CRK/IRK, Economics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Physics, Igbo/Hausa/Yoruba, Fine Art, Geography, Commerce.
(xix) FED-KASHERE requires Literature in English one Arts subject and another Arts or Social Science
(xx) RSU English Language, Literature in English, Government/History and Christian Religious Knowledge/Islamic Religious Studies.
