JAMB REQUIREMENTS TO STUDY NURSING / NURSING SCIENCE IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES, YOUR USEFUL GUIDE IN 2023/2024
This article will accurately guide you through the requirements to study Nursing / Nursing Science in any Nigerian university of your choice. You will know what it takes to successfully gain admission into the medical faculty of any Nigerian university to study Nursing / Nursing Science. You will also see a list of Nigerian universities where you can study Nursing / Nursing Science.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a statutory body in Nigeria saddled with the responsibility to conduct matriculation examination and admit students into Nigerian tertiary institutions. The requirements to study Nursing / Nursing Science in Nigerian universities stated in this post are as spelt out on pages 442 to 449 of the current JAMB Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS). This article aims to make the information more handy and accessible to all parents and guardians as well as students who wish to study Nursing / Nursing Science in any university in Nigeria.
UTME / O’ level subject requirements to study Nursing / Nursing Science in Nigerian universities
Five (5) SSC credit passes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English Language.
JAMB UTME subject combination requirements to study Nursing / Nursing Science in Nigerian universities
Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Direct Entry requirements to study Nursing / Nursing Science in Nigerian universities
i) Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Biology/ Zoology, Chemistry and Physics plus three (3) other ‘O’ Level credit passes in Mathematics, Physics and English Language.
(ii) NRN or its approved equivalent plus five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language and four (4) Science subjects chosen from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Human Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene, Health Science, Further Mathematics and General Science.
Special considerations for Direct Entry
(i) AAU
a) accepts Registered Nurse/Midwife RN, RM with one (1) year post registration experience; as well as RN,RPN or RN,RNA, or RN,RNT plus the UTME requirements.
b) accepts good first degree programme e.g. Biochemistry, Anatomy, Human Physiology, Health Education, Psychology, Guidance and Counselling.
c) does not accept a degree in Zoology and Botany.
(ii) ABU accepts ‘A’ Level/IJMB Passes in three subjects in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology. Registered Nurse (RN) certificate with at least 5 credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Registered Midwifery Certificate.
(iii) ABUAD requires three (3) ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
(iv) AUE – ND credit plus the UTME minimum requirements.
(v) BENIN requires three (3) ‘A’ Level passes in Biology/Zoology, Chemistry and Physics plus ‘O’ Level credit passes in five (5) subjects including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
(vi) CALABAR requires NRN or its approved equivalent plus five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language and one (1) Science subject from the subjects listed in “Direct Entry Requirements” column plus two (2) years registration nursing experience.
(vii) CALABAR accepts HND in Public Health, ND in Environmental Health, Public Health Nursing from West African Health Examination Board in addition to the UTME requirements.
(viii) EBSU accepts HND, NCE and ND with a minimum of Merit and Upper credit respectively in the relevant programme.
(ix) FUTO requires:
a) At least three ‘A’ level passes not below Grade C in Physics and any two of Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.
b) ND/HND at Upper Credit level in Biomedical Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Health sciences.
c) First Degree in Engineering or Health sciences.
d) Very good passes in three JUPEB subjects namely Chemistry, Biology and Physics. It does not accept NCE. Candidates must in addition meet the ‘O’ Level requirements.
(x) IBADAN accepts possession of any one (1) of the following professional qualifications:
a) General Nursing
b) Psychiatric Nursing
c) Mid-Wifery
d) Nursing
e) Nursing Admin
f) Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry, Biology and Physics plus the UTME requirements.
g) Two (2) years post registration experience with preference to more than five (5) years experience for candidates with 1st Degree in health related programme.
h) ILORIN requires two (2) ‘A’ Level passes or equivalents in relevant subjects: Biology, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics/Mathematics.
(xi) JOS requires three (3) ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry, Physics and Biology/Zoology plus ‘O’ Level credit passes in Mathematics and English Language.
(xii) LAGOS requires:
a) all direct entry candidates to satisfy the minimum UTME requirements.
b) registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria as RN or RN/RM with at least two (2) years post-registration cognate experience.
c) passes in three (3) JUPEB subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
d) ‘A’ Level passes or equivalents in at least two (2) subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Zoology.
e) a degree in any health related subjects from a recognized University with a minimum entry requirements for College of Medicine programme.
f) without prejudice to all requirements above, the Department may also conduct an interview for prospective candidates.
(xiii) LAUTECH accepts:
a) ‘A’ Level or equivalents with passes in Chemistry, Biology and Physics (or Zoology)
b) Registered Nurse (RN) Certificates plus the UTME requirements or its equivalent (as approved by Senate) plus ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
c) First Degree of LAUTECH approved by Senate in any related programme or profession plus the UTME requirements.
(xiv) NDU accepts:
a) NURSES: Registered Nurses (NRN), Registered Midwives (RM), Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN) plus five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology, at not more than two (2) sittings.
b) NON-NURSES: B.Sc. not lower than Second Class in relevant programme such as: Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology, Human Nutrition, Medical Laboratory Sciences and any other relevant programme.
(xv) OAU accepts Certificate of Registered Nurse (RN) or SRN or its equivalent as approved by Senate plus ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
(xvi) PHC accepts Three (3) A/Level passes in JUPEB or IJMB or GCE or HSC Passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology including UTME entry requirements. First Degree (Second Class Honours – Upper division) in either Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry or any other related course including UTME entry requirements. Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Midwife (RM) with at least 2 years post qualification experience including UTME entry requirements.
(xvii) UNN accepts:
a) Nurses registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN), plus the UTME requirements.
b) three (3) ‘A’ Level passes in Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry at not more than two (2) sittings plus the UTME requirements.
c) first degree in related programme.
(xviii) EUI accepts:
a) two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Biology/Zoology, Chemistry and Physics in addition to UTME requirements.
b) B.Sc. in relevant fields not below Second Class Lower Division.
c) NRN or its approved equivalent plus five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language and one Science subject chosen from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Human Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene, Health Science, Further Mathematics and General Science.
d) IJMB passes in three (3) subjects in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology.
(xviii) DELSU requires RN/RM or basic RM Diploma, registered and licensed with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
(xix) ILORIN – Registered Nurse (RCN) and Registered Midwife (RM) Certificate only in addition to UTME requirements. Accepts Registered Nurse (RN) or and Registered Nurse certificate only for DIRECT ENTRY and does not accept ‘A’ Level passes or any Degree for DIRECT ENTRY.
Special considerations for UTME
(i) AAU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry at a sitting.
(ii) IBADAN – No admission through UTME.
(iii) IBADAN requires five (5) or six (6) ‘O’ Level credit passes at one (1) or two (2) sittings to include English Language, Biology/Health Science, Chemistry, Mathematics and any one (1) of Economics, Government, Literature in English, History, Geography or Physics, (this will be an advantage).
(iv) NDU requires’0’ level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings.
(v) UNN requires ‘0’ level credit passes or its equivalent at not more than two (2) sittings.
(vi) EUI requires five (5) credit passes at SSC or its equivalent in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
(vii) LCITY requires ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
(viii) DELSU requires SSC ‘O’ Level or its equivalent with credit passes in at least five (5) subjects which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in one sitting.
(ix) FUTO requires at least five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology in not more than two (2) sittings.
(x) ILORIN accepts five (5) ‘O’ Level Credits, Pass in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
(xi) ABU requires Five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
(xii) PHC requires Five (5) SSC credit passes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and English Language.
(xiii) JABU – Candidate must normally posses the Senior Secondary School WAEC or NECO certificate or General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level or their equivalent with credit passes in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics at not more than two (2) sittings, together with an acceptable pass in the UTME and in the Joseph Ayo Babalola University Screening Examination/Interview.
Special considerations for UTME subjects
i) FUTO requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
ii) ILORIN requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
iii) ABU requires Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
iv) PHC requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
