This article will accurately guide you through the requirements to study Pharmacy in any Nigerian university of your choice. You will know what it takes to successfully gain admission into the medical faculty of any Nigerian university to study Pharmacy. You will also see a list of Nigerian universities where you can study Pharmacy.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a statutory body in Nigeria saddled with the responsibility to conduct matriculation examination and admit students into Nigerian tertiary institutions. The requirements to study Pharmacy in Nigerian universities stated in this post are as spelt out on pages 455 to 459 of the current JAMB Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS). This article aims to make the information more handy and accessible to all parents and guardians as well as students who wish to study Pharmacy in any university in Nigeria.
UTME / O’ LEVEL SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS TO STUDY PHARMACY IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
The UTME / O’ level subject requirements to study Pharmacy in Nigerian universities are as follows:
Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
JAMB UTME SUBJECT COMBINATION REQUIREMENTS TO STUDY PHARMACY IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
JAMB UTME subjects are the subjects which you must write in the JAMB Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The UTME subject combination requirement for Pharmacy is as follows:
Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
DIRECT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS TO STUDY PHARMACY IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
Three (3) ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry, Biology/Zoology and Physics or Mathematics plus UTME requirements.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR DIRECT ENTRY
(i) BENIN accepts:
a) ‘A’ Level pass in Botany in lieu of Biology.
b) B.Sc. second class in related programmes.
(ii) BENIN and UYO do not accept ‘A’ Level pass in Mathematics.
(iii) ILORIN accepts ‘A’ Level pass in three (3) science subjects: Chemistry, Physics and Biology
(iv) JOS does not accept Mathematics for Physics. Accepts B.Sc. second class and above in related programmes. It accepts Direct Entry candidates with ‘A’ Level requirements plus five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
(v) LAGOS accepts:
a) Very good passes in three (3) JUPEB/’A’-level subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
b) does not accept B.Sc. degrees.
(vi) NDU accepts:
a) a first degree in Chemistry or any of the Biological Sciences.:
b) ‘A’ Level passes in Physics, Mathematics, or Statistics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology or Botany at not more than two (2) sittings.
C) general requirements for admission in the University, i.e credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including Mathematics and English Language at the ‘O’ Level.
(vii) OAU accepts B.Sc. with a minimum of 2nd Class Honours in relevant programme (Sciences).
(viii) OOU accepts Botany in lieu of Zoology.
(ix) UNN accepts:
a) three (3) ‘A’ Level passes to include Chemistry, Biology/Zoology/Botany and Physics plus the UTME requirements at not more than two (2) sittings.
b) Bachelor’s degree in any of Biological Sciences, Health Science and Technology, or Medical Sciences with a minimum of second class lower division plus the UTME requirements. c) HND upper credit in Biological Sciences, Health Science and Technology or Medical Sciences plus the UTME requirements.
(x) DELSU requires:
a) First degree in relevant Biological Sciences with not less than a second class Upper Division may be considered in addition to the UTME requirement.
b) passes in the GCE advanced level or Higher School Certificate (HSC) or approved equivalent, in Chemistry, Biology (Zoology or Botany) and not more than one (1) sitting.
(xi) BAYERO requires three (3) ‘A’ Level passes to include Chemistry, Biology and Physics. BAYERO does not accept NCE.
(xii) ABU accepts ‘A’ level/IJMB passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Unified Pharmacy Technician Certificate with a minimum of Upper credit.
(xiii) PHC accepts Three (3) A/level passes in Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Mathematics including UTME entry requirements. B.Sc, not lower than Second Class Lower in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Physics, Pharmacology including UTME entry requirements.
(xiv) KASU accepts Ordinary level requirement plus; Passes in Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Zoology at Higher School Certificates or Advance level of GCE, IJMB or equivalents. An acceptable First Degree in relevant Biological or Physical Sciences discipline.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR UTME
(i) IBADAN Same as in Medicine and Surgery.
(ii) NDU require the five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings.
(iii) UNN and UYO require the five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings.
(iv) DELSU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credits passes which must include English Language, Mathematics Chemistry, Physics and Biology in SSC or its equivalents at not more than one (1) sitting.
(v) BAYERO requires five (5) SSCE credit passes in English language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.
(vi) ILORIN requires Credit passes at O’Level in five (5) subjects including: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in WASC or NECO at not more than two (2) sittings.
(vii) LAGOS accepts Five O/Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. (viii) ABU requires Five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. (ix) PHC accepts Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
(x) KASU requires Five ‘O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR UTME SUBJECTS
(i) ILORIN requires Physics Chemistry and Biology.
(ii) LAGOS requires English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
(iii) ABU requires Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
(iv) PHC requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
(v) KASU requires Biology, Chemistry and Physics
