JAMB REQUIREMENTS AND UNIVERSITIES TO STUDY YORUBA IN NIGERIA, YOUR USEFUL GUIDE IN 2024/2025
This article will accurately guide you through the requirements to study Yoruba in any Nigerian university of your choice. You will know what it takes to successfully gain admission into the Arts and Humanities faculty of any Nigerian university to study Yoruba. You will also see a list of Nigerian universities where you can study Yoruba and other related courses.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a statutory body in Nigeria saddled with the responsibility to conduct matriculation examination and admit students into Nigerian tertiary institutions. The requirements to study Yoruba in Nigerian universities stated in this post are as spelt out on pages 233 to 234 and page 237 of the current JAMB Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS). This article aims to make the information more handy and accessible to all parents and guardians as well as students who wish to study Yoruba and other related courses in any university in Nigeria.
UTME / O’ level subject requirements to study Yoruba in Nigerian universities
Five (5) SSC credit passes to include Yoruba and English Language
JAMB UTME subject combination requirements to study Yoruba in Nigerian universities
JAMB UTME subjects are the subjects which you must write in the JAMB Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The UTME subject combination requirement for Yoruba is as follows:
Yoruba and two (2) other subjects in Arts or Social Sciences.
Direct Entry requirements to study Yoruba in Nigerian universities
Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include Yoruba or Literature in English.
Special considerations for Direct Entry
(i) IBADAN accepts two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include Yoruba and another Arts or Social Science subject, It accepts NCE credit/merit in Yoruba and another Arts or Social Science subject.
(ii) OAU accepts NCE merit in Yoruba
(iii) LAGOS accepts Very good passes in three JUPEB/A’ Level subjects in Yoruba/Igbo and any two of History, CRS/IRS, French, Government, Music, Visual Arts and Literature in English. NCE (Merit) in two subjects to include a Nigerian Language.
(iv) ILORIN requires;
a) At least two (2) ‘A’ level passes to include Yoruba and any other Arts/Social Science.
b) NCE/Diploma (Upper Credit) in Yoruba and Social Science subject.
Special considerations for UTME
(i) IBADAN requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes at one sitting or six (6) ‘O’ Level credit passes at two (2) sittings including English Language and two (2) Arts subjects, one of which must be Yoruba
(ii) ILORIN accepts five (5) ‘O’ level credit passes to include Yoruba, English Language, Mathematics and two (2) other Arts/Social Science Subjects. It also accepts candidate who do not offer Yoruba (Language/Literature) but meet other UTME entry requirements.
(iii) OAU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language and any Arts subject.
(iv) AAUA requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Yoruba, Mathematics and any two subjects.
(v) LAGOS requires Five O/Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any three Arts, Science or Social Sciences. Social Studies and Civic Education are also accepted.
Special considerations for UTME Subjects
(i) IBADAN – requires Yoruba and two (2) other subjects in Arts or Social Sciences.
(ii) OAU requires three (3) subjects from Arts and/or Social Sciences.
(iii) OOU – Yoruba and two (2) Arts subjects.
(iv) ILORIN requires Yoruba and two (2) other subjects in Arts/Social Science.
(v) LAGOS requires English Language and any three Arts, Science or Social Sciences.
Nigerian universities where you can study Yoruba
AAUA, EKSU, FOUNTAIN, IBADAN, ILORIN, KWASU, LAGOS, LASUED, NAUB, OAU, OOU, POL-ACAD and UNIOSUN.
Nigerian universities where you can study Yoruba and Communication Arts
LASU with options in:
(i) Yoruba/French.
(ii) Yoruba/Philosophy
(iii) Yoruba/History and International Studies
(iv) Yoruba/Religious Studies
(v) Yoruba/Music
(vi) Yoruba/Theatre Arts
Here the requirements are as follows:
UTME requirement:
Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Yoruba plus any other three (3) subjects.
UTME Subject combination requirement:
Yoruba, and any other two (2) subjects.
Direct Entry requirement:
NCE Yoruba
Special consideration for UTME:
LASU may accept any other Arts/Social Science subject in lieu of Yoruba.
