JAMB REQUIREMENTS AND UNIVERSITIES TO STUDY IGBO IN NIGERIA, YOUR USEFUL GUIDE IN 2024/2025
This article will accurately guide you through the requirements to study Igbo in any Nigerian university of your choice. You will know what it takes to successfully gain admission into the Arts and Humanities faculty of any Nigerian university to study Igbo. You will also see a list of Nigerian universities where you can study Igbo and other related courses.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a statutory body in Nigeria saddled with the responsibility to conduct matriculation examination and admit students into Nigerian tertiary institutions. The requirements to study Igbo in Nigerian universities stated in this post are as spelt out on pages 197 to 199 of the current JAMB Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS). This article aims to make the information more handy and accessible to all parents and guardians as well as students who wish to study Igbo and other related courses in any university in Nigeria.
UTME / O’ level subject requirements to study Igbo in Nigerian universities
Five (5) SSC credit passes to include Igbo, English Language and any other Arts subject.
JAMB UTME subject combination requirements to study Igbo in Nigerian universities
JAMB UTME subjects are the subjects which you must write in the JAMB Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The UTME subject combination requirement for Igbo is as follows:
Igbo and two (2) subjects from Arts and Social Sciences.
Direct Entry requirements to study Igbo in Nigerian universities
(i) Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Igbo and one (1) Arts/Social Sciences subject.
(ii) NCE in Igbo and one Arts subject.
Special considerations for Direct Entry
(i) IBADAN accepts NCE merit/credit in Igbo and another Arts or Social Sciences. Accepts two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include Yoruba and another Arts or Social Science subject.
(ii) IMSU accepts ‘A’ Level passes/NCE merit.
(iii) UNN accepts ‘A’ Level passes or NCE merit in at least one Language and one other subject plus the UTME requirements.
(iv) LAGOS accepts Very good passes in three JUPEB/A’ Level subjects in Igbo/Yoruba and any two of History, CRS/IRS, French, Government, Music, Visual Arts and Literature-in-English. NCE (Merit) in two subjects to include a Nigerian Language. LASU Diploma in Communication Arts.
Special considerations for UTME
(i) IBADAN requires five (5) or six (6) ‘O’ Level credit passes at one or two (2) sitting to include English Language and two (2) other Arts subjects one of which must be Igbo.
(ii) OAU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in English Language, one Arts subject and three (3) other subjects from Sciences, Social Sciences or Arts.
(iii) UNN requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English language and one Science subject. Candidates for Linguistics must possess ‘O’ Level credit pass in Literature in English while candidates for linguistics and Nigerian Language must posses ‘O’ Level credit pass in the Nigerian language to be combined with linguistics.
(iv) LAGOS requires Five O/Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any three Arts, Science or Social Sciences. Social Studies and Civic Education are also accepted.
Special considerations for UTME Subjects
(i) UNIZIK accepts Chinese in lieu of Igbo.
(ii) UNN requires Igbo or any other Language and any other two (2) subjects. For Linguistics (Option), requires Literature in English and two (2) other subjects.
(iii) LAGOS requires English Language and any three Arts, Science or Social Sciences.

Nigerian universities where you can study Linguistics and African Languages
DOU (With options in Igbo, Ika, Urhobo & Kwale)
OAU (with options in:
(i) B.A. (Hons.) Degree in Linguistics
(ii) B.A. (Combined Honours) Degree in Linguistics and English Language
(iii) B.A. (Hons) Degree in Linguistics and Yoruba (Combined)
Nigerian universities where you can study Linguistics, Igbo and other African Languages
UNN
The requirements are same as in Igbo above.
